The 258m by 148m plot is now under the hands of 12 to 13 dedicated community members who are cultivating a diverse array of crops. This initiative not only enhances their food security but also nurtures their independence.
Berta Uwiragiye, one of the farmers, shares her joy: “This opportunity has truly changed my life. I grow beans, cassava, and maize, ensuring my family is fed without worry.”
“I used to stress over food costs, but now, I harvest fresh produce right from the land. Instead of worrying about where our next meal will come from, I can save money for my family’s future goals. It feels amazing to know that we can eat well without the pressure of market expenses,” says Beata Mukakageni, a mother of three who also benefits from the harvest.
Our impact goes beyond agriculture; it’s about building a network of support and collaboration. These farmers contribute to the hotel’s kitchen garden by helping with maintenance and planting vegetables. “We felt that one way to show our gratitude to the hotel for their generosity is by helping in the kitchen garden, where we assist in cleaning and growing more vegetables,” says Uwiragiye.
To ensure transparency and accountability, Mantis Kivu Marina Bay Hotel has established formal contracts with each participant involved in cultivating the land by registering their names to create a partnership where both the community and the hotel benefit.Â
