The island has a resident population of Pantropical, Spotted, Bottlenosed and Rough-Toothed Dolphins. Humpback whales are seasonal visitors between June and December. Between December and April, whale sharks visit the island in large aggregations. St Helena is the only site where male and female whale sharks are seen in equal numbers. These massive but docile creatures can reach lengths of 12 meters. It is possible to snorkel with whale sharks, although interactions with these gentle giants are only under the guidance of accredited local marine tour operators.
