Whether you’re a history boff or not, this Trail takes you on the remarkable journey of Rwanda’s fight for liberation and freedom. It’s a deeply moving glimpse into the historic events that left an indelible mark on its people. It allows you to follow in the footsteps of the gallant heroes, the Patriotic Army, who led the liberation struggle from October 1990 to July 1994.
The Trail – officially launched by Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, in July 2020 – maps out the route of the Patriotic Army, taking in eight unique heritage sites and destinations: Kagitumba Border, Shonga, Mulindi, Mukarange, Musanze (Nyamagumba), Urugano, CND and Gikoba.
It’s a timeline of this important part of history, ahead of Rwanda’s liberation on July 4, 1994.  Despite this turbulent past, Rwanda has since seen many positive changes including economic growth, diverse and unique tourism and has become a model of reconciliation.
