It moves to its own rhythm and beat: Through traditional drums, vibrant music, expressive dances and the rich storytelling passed down through generations. All these elements intertwine into a tapestry that makes the continent one-of-a-kind.

In Africa, music and dance is part of the DNA. Music is far more than just sound, it’s a means of communication, celebration and storytelling. Each region, tribe and culture boasts its own distinctive sound.

This includes the soulful jazz out of South Africa, the energetic Afrobeats from Nigeria, haunting melodies from the 21-string kora, to the rhythmic drumming of the djembe. Africa’s music offers a diverse auditory experience

The language of dance

Dance, like music, plays a vital role in African cultures. It’s not simply an art form but a way of life, with expressive dances performed at every important occasion.

There’s the rhythmic stomping footwork of the Gumboot dancers. Known as Isicathulo, gumboot dancing originated in the gold mines of South Africa as a form of coded conversation. By adding bells to their boots, miners could converse with each other over short distances.

The Indlamu dance, associated with the isiZulu people, was traditionally performed to prepare troops for war. It showcased their muscular strength and mastering of weapon control.

The Maasai jumping dance, or Adumu, is an incredible display of agility and endurance. Although the dance’s beginnings are not fully understood, it’s thought to have developed as a method for Maasai warriors to train for combat and demonstrate their stamina.

In Rwanda, the Igishakamba dance is performed at weddings, festivals, important cultural events and social gatherings. Sticks, whistles and drums are important instruments that guide the performance and create a rhythm that enhances the dance. The dance often weaves together the stories of the beauty of the long-horned Inyambo cows as well as the life of the semi-pastoral people of the region.

While there are myriad styles of music and dance in Namibia, the main ones are Mohiba, Omuhiva and Ondjongo.

The ancient art of trance dance

If you think trance dance was modern, think again! This has been practised by the San (Bushmen) for centuries. In fact, the trance dance is the oldest known religious ritual in the world, depicted in many of southern Africa’s over 30 000 rock art sites.

At the luxurious Feline Fields Lodge in the heart of Bushman territory surrounded by Ju-Huansi and !Kung communities, you can experience a glimpse of the life led by Africa’s original occupants. Learn about veld foods and natural medicines, culture, folklore and perhaps participate in the famous Bushman Trance Dance. After many hours of dancing, singing and clapping, the most experienced dancers – shaman or healers – enter a trance, a central religious ritual for the San.

These living libraries regale tales of everyday life, local heroes and cultural values with a flair that captures the imagination. Listening to an African storyteller is like stepping into another world, as they merge the past with the present and provide a glimpse into the future.

Folklore magic

African folklore is a treasure trove of myths, legends and fables that explain the mysteries of the world and teach valuable life lessons. Stories often feature animals to convey moral and ethical teachings. From the cunning Anansi the Spider to the wise tortoise, the characters and their adventures capture the imagination and offer timeless wisdom.

The San’s rock art tells stories of ancestral encounters with the spirit world, while the Maasai share tales of their gods and the origins of their cattle, which are central to their way of life.
